The
history of GMWA in
Washington State began when two young men from
Tacoma, Bobby and Jimmy Brown, decided to attend the
convention as individual members. They participated as
faculty members and taught classes. Eventually they
registered with the Northern California Chapter.
The first
Washington State Chapter was established in 1971 with Bobby Brown serving as the the first Chapter Rep,
appointed by the Founder, Rev. James Cleveland.
The choir ministered
at their first convention in 1972 in Los Angeles,
California and in 1976 they ministered in Kansas City,
Missouri.
Patrinell
Wright served as the next Chapter Rep. and
the choir continued to flourish. However in the 80's
membership waned and the Chapter ceased to function.
In
1992 the Chapter was re-established by Willis Devone and became a
functioning Chapter again. He was installed as the
Chapter Rep. They ministered in Chicago, IL in 1992, Indianapolis, IN in
1993, Atlanta, GA in 1994, and Los Angeles, CA in 1995.
Willis resigned in
1997 and Marian Griffin was installed as Chapter Rep.
She served until 1999 and Darriel Menefee stepped into
the Chapter Rep position.
In 2000 the Washington State Chapter
joined forces with the Seattle Chapter and the Vancouver
Canada Chapter to become the Pacific Northwest Chapter.
The three regions combined their strengths and resources
to form one large Chapter covering the state of
Washington and British Columbia, Canada. Zina Jordan and
Darriel Menefee served as Co-Chapter Reps.
Rehearsals were held
in Vancouver one month and Seattle the next month.
In 2006, the Chapter decided to return to their original
name (The Washington State Chapter) with Zina Jordan
serving as Chapter Rep. The Choir ministered in Tampa,
FL in 2003 and Orlando, FL in 2007. After 10 years of service, Zina
gained the title of Chapter Rep Emeritus and Kenya Legér
was appointed Chapter Rep.
The Chapter continues in their endeavors
to unite gospel singers and musicians on local and
international levels, to educate, cooperate and
communicate the Christian message through gospel music.
We are
multi-cultural, multi denominational choir and our members come from various
churches and cities throughout the Pacific Northwest.
On December 1, 2012
they presented to the public their first CD project
entitled "Standing on the Promises." |
